Climb on the ROWDY RATHORE Musical Ride

Taking the risk of sounding snobbish or of disappointing some readers, I have to own up to the fact that Sajid-Wajid have seldom been my favorite soundtrack composers. I acknowledge that they are talented and I do believe they have their moments of brilliance but I have sadly never been 100% captivated by a full album of theirs and have always thought that creating a high quality masala soundtrack is a titanic task. The Rowdy Rathore soundtrack however has the merit of having definitely caught my attention and I therefore could not ignore the opportunity of writing something positive about the composers. What follows is a brief account of each track and our recommendations.

'Dhadang Dhang' sets the tone with a powerful and fun groove sung by Wajid and Shreya Goshal. Both the melody, rendition and singing styles transport us to the 1990s and its masala sound. We think the song will be doing the rounds of radio stations and have people humming "dhadang dhang" day in day out.

'Chinta Ta Ta Chita Chita' is another more modern sounding masala track with the characteristic Mika Singh style sticking the repetitive tune in our memory, occasional bansari and all.

"Rowdy" is the proper adjective for 'Aa Re Pritam Pyaare' and the combination of Mamta Sharma's voice with a fast paced background filled with percussions and creative arrangements where there are just the right amount of instrument and rhythm layers to give the listener the impression of rich sound without overwhelming.

The 1990s are clearly paid homage to in 'Chamak Challo Chel Chabeli' which could have been taking right out of one of that decade's film hits. It is an absolute delight to listen to Shreya Ghoshal paired with  Kumar Sanu. How this blogger wishes to listen to him more often in new soundtracks!

The homage continues in full fledged fashion through 'Tera Ishq Bada Teekha' with a lovey performance in 90s style by Javed Ali and Shreya Ghoshal.

Yes, I am a Shreya Ghoshal admirer but I have to say I am still to find a performance by her where I find true flaws. 'Chandaniya (Lori Lori)' has a quiet charm that could only be enhanced by Shreya's voice.

Akshay Kumar provides thunderous dialogues for the final 'Rowdy Mix', which brings us back to 2012. The Mix provides the nightclub sound that will promote the film throughout India's young hangouts and should possibly be given a "music video" picturization.

All in all, the Rowdy Rathore soundtrack pledges full allegiance to the 1990s sound in Bollywood and should be enjoyed by all those who enjoy that masala 90s vibe!

KAHAANI Music Review: Kolkata, You Sexy!

In recent days, the only full recent soundtrack running on my computer is Vishal-Shekhar's powerful and quirky Kahaani, with which I have been very pleasantly surprised, feeling that the duo have just delivered one of their best soundtracks to date, expanding their scope of musical expression and delighting us with a titillating new sound.

Bengali, English and Hindi greet the listener with Aami Shotti Bolchi, in which cold-jazz transforms into metal rock and back, hitting a home run with Usha Uthup's and Shekhar Ravjiani's oodles and bundles of attitude. People hailing from Kolkata have a new and ferociously catchy urban song to impress with!  The track has been paired to a promotional video that is currently making my cinematic "mouth" water.

Hard rock only calms down for a few seconds before joining a Bengali musical background and the great qawaali singer and Mekaal Hasan Band lead vocalist, Javed Bashir, in a fierce 'alaap' that conveys the tone of the story's turmoil. Piya Tu Kaahe Rootha Re boasts highly effective lyrics written by Sandeep Shrivastava and we also cannot congratulate the duo of musical directors enough for their excellent choice of vocalist in this particular song.

Several of my preferred Vishal and Shekhar hits are romantic ballads. Their soft melodies are usually extremely well crafted and Kahaani, the film's title song, follows in such a tradition, taking the best of Vishal-Shekhar's melodic romantic style and gifting it to the extremely well-cast voices of KK in its male version and Shreya Ghoshal in its female and acoustic counterpart. Shreya's voice here is just the way I fancy it the most. I believe minimalistic musical arrangements truly showcase her talent and the song's chorus deftly pulls the listener into Vidya's (the film's lead) disarray and sensibility with its combination of melancholy inducing chords.

Vidya Balan attends the audio launch of Kahaani

Sukhwinder Singh mixes powerful and mellow vocals in Tore Bina, which starts as a fresh folk song and ultimately slides towards gentle pop. The track is easy to listen to and has vast potential but tends to run in too many style and instrumental directions, which is saddening given its sound melodic base and Singh's compelling vocals. It would have possibly been more effective to keep the arrangements simpler in order to bring out Singh's rendition of the song's lyrics. This said, the track still manages to please.

Vishal Dadlani and Shekhan Ravjiani
The Vishal-Shekhar duo keep a pleasant surprise up their sleeve as their closing track, Ekla Cholo Re, featuring an English chorus sung by Clinton Cerejo, welcoming the sincere and moving voice of Amitabh Bachchan and the words of one of my all-time favorite writers, Bengali legend: Rabindranath Tagore. I would have personally preferred a traditional Bengali background melody but I imagine that the uplifting pop feel has been chosen aiming to be in line with the picturization of Tagore's ode (translation in English here - thank you Dunkdaft and Wikipedia).

Cracking the shell of the stereotype they had been cornered into, Vishal and Shekhar showcase their inventiveness and versatility outside of commercial cinema in this album, which we predict will survive well after the film has received its reviews and accolades. A set of six songs could have limited itself to appear pure and sober. However, the experimental verve the musical pair is displaying has resulted in an exhilarating new sound. Thumbs up!

Our favorite picks: Aami Shotti Bolchi, Piya tu Kaahe Rootha Re and both versions of the Kahaani title song.

MAUSAM Stolen Moments of Romance

"Mausam"... When I heard the title of Pankaj Kapoor's maiden film, it brought back memories of Mhd. Rafi's "Aaj mausam bada beimaan hai" and therefore images of traditional romantic movies...
Mausam is a love story spanning the four seasons of its hero and heroine's lives: Harry, a Hindu Punjabi boy, and Aayat, a Muslim Kashmiri girl. The first season is that of their encounter as teenagers in a small village of Punjab. As the two fall in love and the audience watches them grow their lives enter season two. The drama and pain of separation makes their love grow deeper as they mature in season three and finally season four sees both lovers come together.
At a time when most male star actors are working on appearing as young as possible and oozing their sex appeal, 6-pack abs, and stunts in action films, Mausam brings back the innocence of youthful romance with Shahid Kapoor who has stepped from being promising to stunningly talented, whether he is conveying naughtiness, reservation or the pain of a lost love.
The film has tender romantic moments such as a boyfriend requesting a phone kiss to his shy girlfriend or a beautiful scene in which the two protagonists exchange silence and written love notes that the girl systematically dips into water, almost as if the fact that ink disappears was irrelevant due to her ability to keep her lover's words deep in her heart. Both Harry and Aayat also have dialogues in which none of them moves their lips, as if they only needed to look at each other to know what the other is thinking. The symbolism and cinematography of Mausam are two clap-worthy elements that make it endearing, despite the criticism that has been made to some of the film's shortcomings.
Script-wise, the first season of the film is splendid, with tight and rhythmic dialogues and good humour, lasting approximately an hour. The subsequent second season also has stolen moments of romantic beauty but the narration seems to be reaching several limits through the lack of transitional moments that would weave the story better and will affect the narrative as a whole in its second part.
While Sonam Kapoor always looks magnificently fresh as a flower in a young girl role, she somehow lacks the scope and depth to portray a more mature woman while her cavalier, Shahid Kapoor, breezes through all seasons with just the right tone, not bothering with his looks and still looking seductive showing off his talent in a way never seen before.
Mausam could have become a classic had it had a bit more restraint in certain areas and developed others (main and side characters and events). Oh if only Pankaj Kapoor could rewrite the last third of the script just before the climax scene and refilm or edit it with a little more tightness, a full little gem would appear on screen.
The film also counts pleasant music composed by Pritam Chakraborty but one regrets that Shreya Ghoshal's beautiful and highly effective rendition of Jaidev's  "Abhi na Jao Chod Kar" is not included in the soundtrack.

MY NAME IS KHAN MUSIC REVIEW

Karan Johar's 'My Name is Khan' is one of 2010's largely awaited films, starring the legendary on-screen couple, Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. Its recently launched soundtrack has started creating buzz. Listeners can thank the production house and Itunes for making all music tracks available online to listeners worldwide, 3 days before the official store launch, in an unprecedented marketing strategy.

Music directors, Shankar Ehsaan Loy, are back with a pleasant song bouquet, featuring six original compositions. The album also includes four memorable tracks from other Karan Johar films: 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai', 'Suraj Hua Maddham', 'Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna' and 'Kal Ho Naa Ho'.

'Sajda' is an enveloping first track sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Shankar Mahadevan and Richa Sharma. The combination of these three voices singing together in response to each other is a particular treat for the ears while dholak and tabla build up as the song progresses.

Following this enthralling opening, 'Noor-e-khuda' comes and goes between soft, almost naked vocals, and a gentle guitar ballad featuring Adnan Sami alongside Shankar, who can make any track shine. No romantically sweet ballad would however be complete without Shreya Ghoshal's voice. She graces the song towards its last half, rising the level of tenderness to the exact dose required.

Shankar Ehsaan Loy had been known to appreciate and rope in the fantastic classical voice of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan from Pakistan in recent years. They have now repeated the feat by bringing Shafqat Amanat Ali's ('Tum Mile' and 'KANK') talent from across the border to the fore once again in 'Tere naina', which may become the album's favourite track for many Indian but also foreign listeners. Despite its undoubtable international appeal, the song somehow appears to instrumentally mirror the album's inital track. Shafqat's voice succeeds in elevating its essence.

Next comes a Sufi melody, 'Allah hi rahem', sung by Rashid Ali. It seems to be a situational track that will certainly shine brighter once listeners can see its picturization in the film. Instruments and rythms also seem to be repeating themselves a bit in this track, possibly marking the fact that this is again an SEL album for a Dharma Productions film, a repeated collaboration that goes long back and has produced some very successful and musically beautiful soundtracks. The album's sound might however seem a bit too familiar to avid listeners already acquainted with Hindi film music.

The following track is the 'My Name is Khan' theme. Shankar Ehsaan Loy have long proved their talent in terms of instrumental and background music (let us remember the felicitous release of the 'Taare Zameen Par' background score). This track is no exception. Knowing Karan Johar's films, the song may soon be responsible for heart tugging and tear jerking reactions in cinemas throughout the world.

'Rang de' is a pop rock number and the last of the album's original compositions. It ends in a high note with joyous and soul lifting lyrics sung by Shankar and Suraj Jagan.

On the whole, 'My Name is Khan' promises to please the ears of film viewers across cultures with a light dose of Sufi style music delivered in a romantic-pop or rock-pop envelope. This genre has become a trademark of Karan Johar's films and will be easily recognized by his followers in Europe and America.

One of the album's strengths is the quality of its vocals and the selected voice combinations. I would personally recommend alternative SEL albums to first time Hindi music listeners, for a richer and more original experience. Soft pop music lovers who know the trio's music should enjoy this soundtrack however and continue to eagerly await the film release. Indulge your ears!
