MAUSAM Stolen Moments of Romance

"Mausam"... When I heard the title of Pankaj Kapoor's maiden film, it brought back memories of Mhd. Rafi's "Aaj mausam bada beimaan hai" and therefore images of traditional romantic movies...
Mausam is a love story spanning the four seasons of its hero and heroine's lives: Harry, a Hindu Punjabi boy, and Aayat, a Muslim Kashmiri girl. The first season is that of their encounter as teenagers in a small village of Punjab. As the two fall in love and the audience watches them grow their lives enter season two. The drama and pain of separation makes their love grow deeper as they mature in season three and finally season four sees both lovers come together.
At a time when most male star actors are working on appearing as young as possible and oozing their sex appeal, 6-pack abs, and stunts in action films, Mausam brings back the innocence of youthful romance with Shahid Kapoor who has stepped from being promising to stunningly talented, whether he is conveying naughtiness, reservation or the pain of a lost love.
The film has tender romantic moments such as a boyfriend requesting a phone kiss to his shy girlfriend or a beautiful scene in which the two protagonists exchange silence and written love notes that the girl systematically dips into water, almost as if the fact that ink disappears was irrelevant due to her ability to keep her lover's words deep in her heart. Both Harry and Aayat also have dialogues in which none of them moves their lips, as if they only needed to look at each other to know what the other is thinking. The symbolism and cinematography of Mausam are two clap-worthy elements that make it endearing, despite the criticism that has been made to some of the film's shortcomings.
Script-wise, the first season of the film is splendid, with tight and rhythmic dialogues and good humour, lasting approximately an hour. The subsequent second season also has stolen moments of romantic beauty but the narration seems to be reaching several limits through the lack of transitional moments that would weave the story better and will affect the narrative as a whole in its second part.
While Sonam Kapoor always looks magnificently fresh as a flower in a young girl role, she somehow lacks the scope and depth to portray a more mature woman while her cavalier, Shahid Kapoor, breezes through all seasons with just the right tone, not bothering with his looks and still looking seductive showing off his talent in a way never seen before.
Mausam could have become a classic had it had a bit more restraint in certain areas and developed others (main and side characters and events). Oh if only Pankaj Kapoor could rewrite the last third of the script just before the climax scene and refilm or edit it with a little more tightness, a full little gem would appear on screen.
The film also counts pleasant music composed by Pritam Chakraborty but one regrets that Shreya Ghoshal's beautiful and highly effective rendition of Jaidev's  "Abhi na Jao Chod Kar" is not included in the soundtrack.

Unforgettable RANG DE BASANTI: A Retrospective Review

Forget mainstream Bollywood, forget candy floss, forget boy-chases-girl-chases-boy around trees... As adorable as regular fare from our favorites at Film City may be, 'Rang de Basanti' takes each and every member of the audience on a totally different ride and upon each viewing I say:

YEH CINEMA HAI, baby!

Last week, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's groundbreaking film was screened before its cast and crew in honour of its 5th anniversary (26th January). Several fans of the film across the world also celebrated the occasion by parking the RDB dvd in their drives that week and I am happy to have joined them.. There is a saying that claims "there is no place like home" and that is exactly how I felt as I re-watched one of my all-time favorite films, not only from India, but from around the world. Yes. This is a film I bought several times in order to distribute copies to friends and of course purchased the special edition with a "gem disk" that features Mehra's ultimate commentary. I could never get enough of it!

For those readers who are Hindi cinema newbies and therefore not familiar with what all this justified fuss is about, a brief synopsis follows the trailer below (purple text).

Sue (Alice Patten), a young film maker from London sets to shoot a film about India's freedom fighters based on her grandfather's diary (a British jailor in India during the pre-independence struggle). She hence flies to Delhi and finds whom she believes are the 6 perfect actors for her film. After hesitatingly accepting to participate in it, all 6 youngsters embark on an awakening journey that will shift their view of their country and will make them act upon it together in order to change a corrupt status quo.

I would personally have wanted to be a tiny mouse under Mehra's chair perking my ears up by listening while he narrated his script to one and the other before he finalised his cast. How he produced such a fantastic ensemble of actors remains astonishing to me: impressive Soha Ali Khan, Southern Indian stars R. Madhavan and Siddharth, extremely talented Atul Kulkarni and Sharman Joshi, superstar Aamir Khan, a very dedicated Kunal Kapoor, a highly convincing Alice Patten and mature secondary actors such as Om Puri, Lekh Tandon, Kirron and Anupam Kher as well as yesteryear belle Waheeda Rehman. Six of these actors were given substantious roles that cannot be substracted from the plot, making each and every one of them essential for the story to take place.

Casting was not the only merit. 'Rang de Basanti' masterfully merges two stories that end up generating an intricate climax that is heavy with purpose. The film compares India under the British rule to contemporary India, governed by corrupt politicians, while also placing a finger upon what the youth of India can do to make today's situation progress. I wonder if anyone before Rakeysh Mehra had pulled off a film in India with such a statement and without reeking of  overdone or preachy nationalism.

The writers successfully gift us a story about:
* college friendships,
* a brief close-up on the strength of India's freedom fighters,
* a critique on fundamentalism,
* a view of the consequences of taking justice into one's own hands,
* sound advice inviting the youth to become involved in their country and to transform it from the inside out.

Other directors / screenplay writers would have gone haywire with so many meaningful things to say in solely one film but this is not so with Mehra and his team, who succeeded not only in getting these messages across but also in keeping the audience engaged until the end of the film, with a climax one could have rarely predicted.

The climax was indeed a surprise and for many audience members remained a mystery or a drawback. In its defence, I would say that the writers gave us two possible endings in one film, which I personally find to be a very intelligent approach. It somehow reminds me of those books some of us read during our childhood called "Choose your Own Adventure", where depending on the reader's choice of action upon ending a chapter, he/she advances to page X or to page Y. I remember sometimes "cheating" out of curiosity and reading both pages X and Y! Well, this is more or less what happens with the ending of  'Rang de Basanti'. One gets a glimpse of two possibilities, both of them actually make up the climax in its totality, and the director leaves the audience to sift through it all and to choose which was the best option.

The stellar performances, fresh aesthetics and original script with tight dialogues give us a taste of college and help us penetrate the coming of age of  Indian youth in a subtle but bold and humanistic manner. My brain was reeling after I watched RDB for the first couple of times and I would venture to say that the film could apply to the youth of many a country in this planet, which makes for a grand international appeal. Last but not least, a stupendous soundtrack by AR Rahman peppers the film's situations and blends into the images with natural and tasteful ease.

All of this makes 'Rang de Basanti' sound like a very deep and serious film. It is certainly deep, but its master stroke is to also be highly entertaining.
In the end, after having us experience lighthearted fun and making us follow the film's characters through thick and thin, Mehra seems to say to critical souls "Stop whining... think... now take action!". And we, besotted with the film, are bound to keep listening.

DABANGG! Vintage Masala's Resurrection!

Bollywood-born Robinhood, Chulbul Pandey (Salman Khan) is capable of crying but still masculine to the core, in true Hindi cinema style. And did anyone say 'fear'? That is certainly a concept unknown to this 'Dabangg' hero (I can still hear a trail of ladies sighing as they come out of the cinema hall).

Cop... lover... rebel Chulbul happens to lose his attachment to family in his childhood when his widowed mother, Naini (Dimple Kapadia), marries Prajapati Pandey (Vinod Khanna), with whom she has son Makhanchan (Arbaaz Khan). Chulbul will only find the worth of family ties later down the line, once he meets and decides to marry exquisite Rajo (Sonakshi Sinha).

Pure masala is not usually my cup of tea as I often suffer from Western-cinema-viewer's syndrome. However, 'Dabangg' had me cracking up from the very first action scene and grooving to its fantabulous soundtrack (by Sajid-Wajid). Salman's mass appeal and power is absolutely undisputable in this film, where he rules the screen non-stop, surely getting cinemas packed with his cool macho quotient, comic timing and spot-on performance.

Abhinav Kahsyap directs a mad roller coaster of emotion, action, romance and almost every other genre he wanted to explore in 'Dabangg'  making it a hardcore masala that is evocative of 70s Bolly/Tollywood flicks while managing to throw some truly slick action effects for a more modern experience. "Where did the script go?" some may wonder. And we reply: "Who cares?!". Salman Khan is so brilliant at playing his character that it becomes difficult to tease them both apart. Hats off to Khan, who indeed truly becomes not only Chulbul Pandey - the man who can grab the sun in his hand - but also single-handedly succeeds in INCARNATING the entire film!

Sonakshi Sinha is paired as Salman's love interest and can set the screen ablaze with her eyes, proving that she is a promising actress whom we look forward to seeing more of soon. Senior actors such as Anupam Kher, Om Puri, Dimple Kapadia and Vinod Khanna are of course always a pleasure to watch. However, with 'Dabangg' one should not expect a meaningful film with complex roles that may bring their deepest talent to the fore.

All this said, go ahead: get that ticket, sit back and don't forget to put on your seatbelt. The 'Dabangg' ride is not mind-stimulating but it sure can entertain the wits out of many an audience. Expect vintage masala, a Dharmendra-like climax and lots of 'Matrix' type action with smart alecky lines brilliantly delivered by Salman Khan and you will be ready for a delirious and fun ride.

Dil Bole Hadippa Songs Download [MP3] [2009]

Dil Bole Hadippa Songs

Looked at the poster??, then you probably could have noticed who's in the left??. Really I could not even imagine at the first sight that she is Rani Mukerjee;p, indeed I was even searching on for her. Dil Bole Hadippa is a film directed by Anurag Singh, and it's starring Rani Mukerji and Shahid Kapoor in the lead roles along with Anupam Kher, Rakhi Sawant and gorgeous Sherlyn Chopra in the supporting roles.

It's a story about Veera Kaur (Rani) who's loves to play Cricket, but is denied as girls in that village are not allowed to play Cricket. So wearing a turban and a beard she becomes Veer Pratap Singh (reminds of Veer Zaara:) and gets an entry into Rohan’s (Shahid) team. I have set my expectations high from this movie, and hope that it keeps up to it when released on September 18.

Music of DBH is tuned by Pritam and it's Punjabi types. I liked the songs, especially the title track and 'Ishq Hi Rab Hai'. Hope that you enjoy listening them too.
