The trailers of Kunal Kohli's Teri Meri Kahaani made us all think that the film was a reincarnation drama. Seeing the three different looks of the lead pair Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra over three different eras, there were speculations that the film might have the lead pair reborn again and again. However, "Teri Meri Kahani is not a reincarnation film. It's a love story of three different pairs spread over three generations". Can Kunal Kohli strike gold with this hatke love story?

Can we truly luv one person throughout our life and hope that fate makes us meet with the same person in every life of ours?

The story of the film takes us through a journey of eternal love between a couple who have vowed to love each other not only in this life but in every life to follow. Their love is so strong that destiny wants to bring them together. The story starts in 1969 Bombay with Govind and Ruksar, then moves ahead to present times, 2012 England with Radha and Krish and then goes back in time to Punjab, 1910 with Aradhana and Javed.

Can Javed and Aradhana still be together? Will Ruksar realize that Govind’s feelings for her were genuine? Will Krish be able to clear the misunderstandings?

Will true love prevail? Or will destiny takes it’s course?

The music of the film is composed by Sajid – Wajid. Mukhtasar, has a fantastic tempo and rhythm matched with good lyrics. Allah Jaane, is a sweet track, The brightest song is, Humse Pyaar Kar Le., while other tracks like Jabse Mere DIl ko, and That’s I Really Wanna do are good but fail to make any impression. Teri Meri Kahaani's music is youthful and  Sajid- Wajid deliver another hit sound track. Timelines, boundaries seems to be a favourite recipe for Bollywood success in these few years. So why not even this one. Once again we have yet another romantic movie with power packed music to back it up.

Kunal Kohli gives us a lovely youthful film , that is indeed very different from what we have seen in the past. The influence of Yash Chopra is plain to see. He has made a film that will appeal to all romantics out there.

Performance wise as the film is set in three different time periods Shahid is playing three different roles in the film across eras and that is something that he has never done before. He is playing a strong Muslim character Javed which is a first for him. Then he has never enacted a cool trendy character from the current era in a manner as shown in the film, Also he enacts a retro character, getting into a 60s mode is not something that many actors of today's generation can boast of. All of this brings uniqueness to the film because whenever Shahid has done something different. He stands out in all three roles he has enacted, but the poetry speaking Javed stands out. Priyanka Chopra is not stretched as an actress in the three roles she plays in the film , but her chemistry is sizzling with Shahid.

A lovely romantic comedy that spans one hundred years and does really make you believe that true love can prevail. All you romantics are going to love it.

Verdict:3/5

Climb on the ROWDY RATHORE Musical Ride

Taking the risk of sounding snobbish or of disappointing some readers, I have to own up to the fact that Sajid-Wajid have seldom been my favorite soundtrack composers. I acknowledge that they are talented and I do believe they have their moments of brilliance but I have sadly never been 100% captivated by a full album of theirs and have always thought that creating a high quality masala soundtrack is a titanic task. The Rowdy Rathore soundtrack however has the merit of having definitely caught my attention and I therefore could not ignore the opportunity of writing something positive about the composers. What follows is a brief account of each track and our recommendations.

'Dhadang Dhang' sets the tone with a powerful and fun groove sung by Wajid and Shreya Goshal. Both the melody, rendition and singing styles transport us to the 1990s and its masala sound. We think the song will be doing the rounds of radio stations and have people humming "dhadang dhang" day in day out.

'Chinta Ta Ta Chita Chita' is another more modern sounding masala track with the characteristic Mika Singh style sticking the repetitive tune in our memory, occasional bansari and all.

"Rowdy" is the proper adjective for 'Aa Re Pritam Pyaare' and the combination of Mamta Sharma's voice with a fast paced background filled with percussions and creative arrangements where there are just the right amount of instrument and rhythm layers to give the listener the impression of rich sound without overwhelming.

The 1990s are clearly paid homage to in 'Chamak Challo Chel Chabeli' which could have been taking right out of one of that decade's film hits. It is an absolute delight to listen to Shreya Ghoshal paired with  Kumar Sanu. How this blogger wishes to listen to him more often in new soundtracks!

The homage continues in full fledged fashion through 'Tera Ishq Bada Teekha' with a lovey performance in 90s style by Javed Ali and Shreya Ghoshal.

Yes, I am a Shreya Ghoshal admirer but I have to say I am still to find a performance by her where I find true flaws. 'Chandaniya (Lori Lori)' has a quiet charm that could only be enhanced by Shreya's voice.

Akshay Kumar provides thunderous dialogues for the final 'Rowdy Mix', which brings us back to 2012. The Mix provides the nightclub sound that will promote the film throughout India's young hangouts and should possibly be given a "music video" picturization.

All in all, the Rowdy Rathore soundtrack pledges full allegiance to the 1990s sound in Bollywood and should be enjoyed by all those who enjoy that masala 90s vibe!

DABANGG! Vintage Masala's Resurrection!

Bollywood-born Robinhood, Chulbul Pandey (Salman Khan) is capable of crying but still masculine to the core, in true Hindi cinema style. And did anyone say 'fear'? That is certainly a concept unknown to this 'Dabangg' hero (I can still hear a trail of ladies sighing as they come out of the cinema hall).

Cop... lover... rebel Chulbul happens to lose his attachment to family in his childhood when his widowed mother, Naini (Dimple Kapadia), marries Prajapati Pandey (Vinod Khanna), with whom she has son Makhanchan (Arbaaz Khan). Chulbul will only find the worth of family ties later down the line, once he meets and decides to marry exquisite Rajo (Sonakshi Sinha).

Pure masala is not usually my cup of tea as I often suffer from Western-cinema-viewer's syndrome. However, 'Dabangg' had me cracking up from the very first action scene and grooving to its fantabulous soundtrack (by Sajid-Wajid). Salman's mass appeal and power is absolutely undisputable in this film, where he rules the screen non-stop, surely getting cinemas packed with his cool macho quotient, comic timing and spot-on performance.

Abhinav Kahsyap directs a mad roller coaster of emotion, action, romance and almost every other genre he wanted to explore in 'Dabangg'  making it a hardcore masala that is evocative of 70s Bolly/Tollywood flicks while managing to throw some truly slick action effects for a more modern experience. "Where did the script go?" some may wonder. And we reply: "Who cares?!". Salman Khan is so brilliant at playing his character that it becomes difficult to tease them both apart. Hats off to Khan, who indeed truly becomes not only Chulbul Pandey - the man who can grab the sun in his hand - but also single-handedly succeeds in INCARNATING the entire film!

Sonakshi Sinha is paired as Salman's love interest and can set the screen ablaze with her eyes, proving that she is a promising actress whom we look forward to seeing more of soon. Senior actors such as Anupam Kher, Om Puri, Dimple Kapadia and Vinod Khanna are of course always a pleasure to watch. However, with 'Dabangg' one should not expect a meaningful film with complex roles that may bring their deepest talent to the fore.

All this said, go ahead: get that ticket, sit back and don't forget to put on your seatbelt. The 'Dabangg' ride is not mind-stimulating but it sure can entertain the wits out of many an audience. Expect vintage masala, a Dharmendra-like climax and lots of 'Matrix' type action with smart alecky lines brilliantly delivered by Salman Khan and you will be ready for a delirious and fun ride.

WANTED film review

Today we are glad to feature one of the fantastic reviews being written by the Italian Cine Hindi blog. We are thus very proud to have Diana's insightful review of "Wanted", Salman Khan's latest mega-hit film. A big hello to the knowledgeable team in Italy, with whom we are happy to be establishing a more regular collaboration. Ciao a tutte!
(The original review , written in Italian may be found here).

‘Wanted’ is the Hindi remake of the highly successful Tamil film, ‘Pokkiri’ which was directed by Prabhu Dheva, in charge of directing also the current Hindi version.

‘Wanted’ was released in September last year and may be considered as the most exciting film to be released in 2009. The audience’s acclaim immediately catapulted it to super-hit status within the first week of its release. Critical acclaim additionally ensued, resulting in ‘Wanted’ sweeping away competition from 'Dil Bole Hadippa!' which had released the same weekend. This is undoubtedly due to the film’s perfectly scrumptious mix of action, humour, music, romance and drama in true Indian style: Voilà! Bollywood in all its glorious splendour!

THE PLOT
Radhe (Salman Khan) is a professional killer working for the mafia bosses that share the control of organised crime in Mumbai. He is involved in their gangland wars but works only for money.

Amongst corrupt politicians, crooked cops and criminals, he meets Jhanvi (Ayesha Takia), young, beautiful and naïve, with the vital statistics of a pin-up girl. The two fall in love but the odds are stacked against Radhe, a killer, and the gentle Jhanvi.

‘Wanted’ is an action film with a fluid and enthralling plot. The story’s characters are well-conceived, particularly the despiteful Inspector Talpade (one would have a difficult time imagining a more smarmy policeman). The soundtrack and choreography are also very pleasant and enjoyable. The same amount of attention and care has been put into treating both the romance in the film and the inventive and enthusiastic shoot-outs and brawls. The entire cast has delivered fine performances. Humour and entertainment in spades, ‘Wanted’ is definitely a film not to be missed.

WHAT WORKS:
* Salman Khan, Salman Khan, Salman Khan: a vibrant dancer, an invincible fighting machine, a lovable but caustic boyfriend.

* Salman Khan again, who in the 33rd and 57th minute takes the flowers from a small vase and drinks the water.

* All the action scenes

* All the scenes between Radhe and Jhanvi

* The soundtrack, in particular the ‘Dil Leke’ track, which has been picturized in breathtaking Santorini, creating the perfect atmosphere for a passionate love story or a romantic honeymoon. (Note from HCB: Check out the video of the song and the lyrics, translated to English, by clicking here)

WHAT DOESN’T:
* Nothing!
Perhaps, purely for the sake of argument, the ending between the two lovers could have been more impassioned, but there is already talk of a sequel. To see more of Radhe and Jhanvi together, we will just have to be patient.

TRIVIA TIDBITS
* The picturization of ‘Jalwa’ features a nice cameo performance from Prabhu Deva, Govinda and Anil Kapoor.

* Both Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan are named in the film.

* Wanted by Prabhu Deva is the Hindi remake of ‘Pokkiri’, also directed by Prabhu Deva. ‘Pokkiri’ in turn, is a Tamil remake of ‘Pokkiri’ a film made in Telugu and directed by Mahesh Babu.

VEER - A Bolly-dream of another age

A much talked about and awaited film, 'Veer', despite Salman Khan's effort and involvement, tends to leave the audience exhausted after what seems like a wild and incongruous ride in a time machine.

Take films like 'Pirates of the Caribbean', 'He-Man' or even 'Braveheart'. Add a dose of splendourous images, epoch film moments featuring a beautiful girl and scenes with Indian festivals thrown in and...shazam! You have 'Veer'!

The plot concentrates on a Rajputana tribe who parties, drinks and kills, sometimes with a good helping of gore, while at the same time wearing impressive pirate-like or soldier outfits that are not historically identifiable. The tribe is betrayed by the king of Madhavgarh (Jackie Shroff), who acts in favor of the British. Veer and Punya (Salman and Sohail Khan), two of the tribe's young members, are sent to London in order to understand the British mindset and use this information to the advantage of their clan. Veer, however, falls in love with Madhavgarh's princess, making matters a little more complicated, as would usually have a typical Bolly-drama.

It is sad to see that a film in which so much splendour and energy has been placed has failed to put true soul into its story. In spite of an attractive soundtrack, lavish sets and some fun choreographies, 'Veer' fails to impress, mainly due to an underdeveloped plot and a thoroughly illogic script.

If you are a huge Salman Khan fan or if you care little about a logical plot and wish to watch a modern film that still features some of Bollywood's most ancient clichés: strong melodrama, good looking people in heavy clothing and colourful decors, by all means do watch 'Veer'. If not, you might want to wait for Salman's next releases or give another one of his past films a rewatch instead.
