Dil Dhoondta Hai- A Song Composed While Cooking

This song from Mausam(1976) was written by Gulzar, composed by Madan Mohan, and sung by Bhupinder. The song has two versions, one a solo by Bhupinder and a duet of Lata Mangeshkar with Bhupinder. The solo was used during the titles of the film and the duet was picturized on the young Sanjeev Kumar and Sharmila Tagore.

The solo version happens to be Gulzar's favorite, is by far the soberer and serene. The duet has a faster tempo. Both versions have three stanzas with different interludes. The Mukhada was taken from a Ghalib ghazal with a slight change. In the ghazal, it is 'Jee Dhoondta Hai', Madan Mohan changed it to Dil Dhoondta Hai., since it worked better for the metre.

This wasn’t the only time Gulzar was inspired by Ghalib. He went a step further in the song Satrangi Re, (Dil Se, 1998), in which he wove Ghalib’s couplet into his lyrics, crediting the source by its name.

This song is the pivot around which the film revolves. It connects the characters in time. the first time when the Doctor(Sanjeev Kumar) is traveling from Calcutta to Darjiling by road where he met Chanda decades ago.

Gulzar in a book told that while composing the interludes of the song Madan Mohan was strolling between his music room and his kitchen. He(Gulzar) had gone to his house for dinner. Madan Mohan was a good cook, he was cooking mutton at that time. During that duration, he composed the tune of this song.

Gulzar was one of the contenders for the National Award for that year. Unfortunately, no award was given to any lyricist that yeat. Similarly, he was nominated for Filmfare's Best lyricist award but lost out to lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi for Kabhie Kabhie.

Madan Mohan had a habit of making 5-6 tunes of one song, he then selects the best out of them. For this song too he made 6 tunes one of which was later used in Veer Zara (2004). Here a clipping is given below, you could see his versatility

Dil Dhoondhta Hai - Madan Mohan sings many tunes for one song

7 KHOON MAAF Music Review

Late night insomnia. I chance upon the music soundtrack of upcoming ‘7 Khoon Maaf’. My heart skips a beat at the good news. Vishal Bhardwaj and Gulzar are behind it. Both are similar to a quality seal on an album. My chance to finally relax and listen to new soulful music tonight is probably here. The computer drive’s laser skims the CD and…

01. Darling - My first reaction is “YES!”. Bhardwaj has done it again. Russian theme ‘Kalinka’, one of my favorite folk tunes, bounces off my bedroom’s walls. The muscles in my body feel compelled to move to the rhythm while Rekha Bhardwaj and Usha Uthup revisit the classic and transform it into a crisp ear-treat (Clinton Cerejo and Francois Castellino join the party in the re-make bonus track that has been baptised ‘Doosri Darling’). This is a skillful opening that certainly has a Russian but also "new tango" feel to it and I must say the "Bhardwaj mood" is set from square one!

02. Bekaraan – Wind. Raindrops. The sound of far away thunder. A heartbeat. The nazm written by Gulzar has been discreetly musicalized by Bhardwaj. It is all but pretentious but may just be what the doctor ordered. Vishal’s voice always has the privilege of leaving me dreamy… Other background vocals echo the starting wind. Soothing. A romantic balm with a beautiful ending.

03. O Mama – Strong performance by K.K. and lyrics by a rocking Gulzar! However, after such a spacy previous 'Bekaraan', I would have possibly preferred listening to the acoustic version of ‘O Mama’ featured as a bonus track in this space. It truly places K.K.’s powerful voice and raw delivery at the forefront of the melody for listeners to enjoy.

04. Awaara – Strings and percussion drizzle from the speakers and I close my eyes in expectation. The guitar riffs get my senses rolling and Master Saleem’s swift vocals elevate the atmosphere and me with it. This is a piece that I would have instinctively recognised as Vishal Bhardwaj’s, santoor, sarangi and all. The singular note combinations, airy feel and dark rhythmic core are all there and nonetheless Vishal succeeds in reinventing his musical personality with utmost elegance. ‘Awaara’ is witness to his chamaeleonic talent.

05. Tere Liye – How many songs have been named 'Tere Liye'? How many lovely ones have I played and replayed in my acoustic mind? This suave sound poem allows the piano and jazzy bass to dance together, playfully throwing soft and unusual chords at each other as romanticism touches new shores. The sitar interludes and the matter-of-fact interpretation by Suresh Wadkar make this particular ‘Tere Liye’ a lovable piece of artwork that will be rediscovered upon each listen.

06. Dil Dil Hai – Rock with a punch enters the scene. Seldom have I heard a singer from India give a rock track all he’s got but 'Dil Dil Hai' has impressive and exciting vocals by Suraj Jagan, who delivers with huge dollops of attitude. After listening I nevertheless still feel I should await the song’s picturisation before giving it a thumbs up. Maybe I have become too old for outright metal rock?

07. Yeshu – The song has a compelling introduction of church bells and choirs. The organ rhythm and a haunting guitar loop uncover Rekha Bhardwaj’s expressive voice, which has been gloriously selected for the mood while electronic instruments blend in without breaking the spell. Grandeur only frightens those who are afraid of achieving it and, as this gentle piece rises to touch grandeur, it pulls you in and moves you with a prayer that leaves no emotion unexplored.

And thus, my friends, as the CD drive cools down I have danced, smiled, pined and managed to unwind. Farewell, insomnia. Tomorrow is another day, and a better one for having discovered Gulzar’s and Bhardwaj’s new offerings. Here is wishing you all the same thrill. :-)

AR Rahman’s exhilarating RAAVAN

The AR Rahman-Mani Ratnam duo is back to mercilessly stimulate our ears. No sir, they indeed did not have enough with delighting us with Roja (1992), Bombay (1995), Dil Se (1998), Saathiya (2002), Yuva (2004) and Guru (2006). Raavan, Ratnam's latest, is creating expectation before its release with a soundtrack that is daring and sumptuous to say the least, tribal at its core and… let us cut to the chase and give you our take on each spine tingling track.
'Beera Beera' is the introduction of the film's main character and opens with Mustafa Kutoane's earthy Afro voice. Additional tribal and electronic voice effects are joined by the enthralling rhythm of clapping hands, drums, xylophone, bells and the hearty singing of Kirti Sagathia and Vijay Prakash. As soon as the promos of the film were out (refer to the video below), AR Rahman fans were glued to their earphones in approval of this track's excerpt, claiming him the most talented music alchemist of this modern era. Listen to the teaser for yourself and enjoy.

Second track, 'Behene De', plunges the listener into a dark but captivating musical journey. It features deliciously accurate vocals by Karthik, who some listeners might remember for his spunky rendition of song 'Behka' in 2008's hit film Ghajini. Not surprisingly, in this track Karthik succeeds in carrying the listener through soulful string arrangements and modern electric guitars with the same skillfulness, leaving us with only one wish, to hear more of him! As if this were not enough brilliance, Gulzar adds his golden touch to the song by painting with exquisitely deep words the doomed feeling of helpless love (refer to lyrics and their English translation here).

Following these splendid songs, 'Khilli Re' undusts sitar, tabla, tambourine and flute, providing a dreamy fusion of traditional Indian music and modern sounds which features the honeysweet voice of Reena Bhardwaj, previously acclaimed for her singing in Meenaxi. Her rendition of the melody lingers on well after you have listened to the entire album.

Next in line are 'Ranjha Ranjha' and 'Thok de Killi'. Despite the fact that 'Ranjha Ranjha' has 'Ghenda Phool's' (Delhi 6) star voice, Rekha Bhardwaj, at its forefront, and even though 'Thok de Killi' has a powerful masculine sound, these might well be the album's first tracks that you might have a difficulty warming up to as both songs feature a liberal use of synthesizers and electric guitars. One of AR Rahman's greatest assets is his will to experiment. That of Mani Ratnam's is to leave enough space for Rahman to go beyond his boundaries and create genius tracks. I still wonder if some listeners will believe that the composer has overstepped them in these particular two songs, but then again, only time and the film that inspired him will tell.

Closing the album, 'Kata Kata' is slightly reminiscent of AR Rahman's excellent work in films such as Mangal Pandey or Roja. A festive and euphoric chill will run down your spine as you listen to the track time and time again, discovering a voice here or a percussion there that you had not quite paid attention to before. Yes, you've got it, the track boasts such rich instrumentation that you are unlikely to ever tire of it. Ila Arun's Rajasthani rawness is mind blowing and will stir any remaining dormant cells.
Raavan is an intriguing and unpredictable soundtrack that promises to awaken audiences to the world of an equally effervescent being with 10 heads and 100 names... Get ready. Umeed ko aag laga zara (Set your hopes on fire).

Note: Seemingly, the Hindi version of the Raavan soundtrack shall sadly lack one song featuring the talent of Sonu Niigaam. The Tamil version of the song should be released soon in the Tamil soundtrack for the same film. Please refer to this post often as we shall provide updates.

STRIKER Music Review

Chandan Arora's film strikes music gold, delivering a shiny and novel soundtrack that boasts style consistency despite the fact that its director and lead actor Siddharth chose six different composers to suit the film. Their unconventional bet is to be saluted, as the necessary time and care was taken to make not only a soundtrack for a film but also a rich and enjoyable music album.

Set against 1992 Mumbai, the film is a powerful ode to India's maximum city, the relationship between its various communities and a man's resilience.

Shailendra Bharve and Jeetendra Joshi's 'Cham Cham' is a flawless start to the stimulating listening experience, in which Sonu Nigam skillfully teases our ears with a slow qawwali. Bharve is known for the 'Taare Zameen Par' track 'Mera Jahan' and proves his talent here again, delighting us for a good seven minutes without anyone wanting this track to end, thanks to the song's perfect arrangements and captivating rythm, Joshi's love-heightening lyrics and of course Nigam's incomparable voice.

Amit Trivedi and Prasant Ingole make their appearance next with 'Bombay Bombay'. The catchy song features a cool Siddharth, singing and reciting dialogue lines amid synth loops, percussions and electric guitar. Catch the tune's "making of" by clicking here  or its picturization below if you wish to hear lead actor Siddharth's pleasant voice, particularly if you had not heard him sing in Telugu soundtracks before.

A rugged 'Haq Se', from unstudied vocals down to rap arrangements and even some car horns and Irish-Sufi solos, will have you moving your head to the strong beat. Yuvan Shankar Raja is well known in the Southern film industry for his music and Nitin Raikwar's lyrics duly express the characters' friendship and dreams.

An all-out Swanand Kirkire modern qawwali brings the positive feel I always tend to associate with him with a festive 'Maula'. The track thankfully has Kirkire's husky voice as its messenger, as none other would have been able to make the pacy melody justice, being that he personally composed and wrote lyrics for it. The arrangements give the traditional genre a revamp, making this one of the album's most original tracks.

'Yun Hua' surreptitiously elevates the listener to some forgotten place in between the clouds and the sun. The fluttering romantic track is composed and also performed by Vishal Bhardwaj, who sings Gulzar's delectable lyrics and scats his way to heaven, making this yet another song in which choosing the composer's vocals was the way to go.

What had been an all male soundtrack moves into feminine mode with a delicate Sunidhi Chauhan singing 'Pia Saanvara'. Bharve and Joshi join hands once again creating a loungey, gently dissonant and innocent melody beckonning a lady's love to return. (Listen to 'Pia Saanvara' courtesy BollyFM).

The soundtrack ends with one of the best hip-hop reggaeton's I have heard in recent years. Blaaze's potent 'Aim Lagaa' has the right beats, echoes, moans and groans "one by one by one". It mixes in tabla and sitar strings while expressing the leading character's peculiar outlook in rhythmic fashion. Blaaze's close collaboration with AR Rahman has made him known to the audience but he is a true value in himself, mixing influences from all of his various cultural backgrounds (Africa, India, England, USA) and beyond. The song's Rickshaw Mix by DJ Akhtar is another danceable alternative, adding more brass, harmonia and extra female emceeing. (Listen to 'Aim Lagaa' courtesy BollyFM).

'Striker' may have not benefitted from the advantages of large publicity but the rumour doing the rounds in the press is that the film is highly recommended. Its soundtrack is also one that should please listeners from all fronts, which goes to show that doing things off the beaten track sometimes goes a long way.

Watch STRIKER, the full movie, released by Studio 18 on Youtube exclusively for overseas audiences (outside India) for a minimal cost. STRIKER includes English subtitles and other subtitle options. May this initiative feature as an example for wider released Hindi films, which are usually screened overseas much later than in India or not at all.

GULZAR - The poet... the romantic... the child!

We are glad to have Ashu, our collaborator from the Hindi Lyrics section, in the Hindi Cinema blog team. She is a fervent admirer of Gulzar's work and has written an introduction to the talented poet's life. Welcome to HCB, Ashu. It is our privilege to have someone as gifted with words collaborating with us.

As the world sang Jai ho and applauded the might of Indian film music… as AR Rahman accepted the much deserved Oscars followed by the Grammies… as millions of people watched this moment with pride…there was one hero of this success story that was missing from the limelight. One of the song writers of this song, which has become a rage world wide…Gulzar.

Born Sampurn Singh, in 1936, in a Sikh family of a small town (now in Pakistan), he adopted the pen name Gulzar, which can be loosely translated as “garden” or “collection of flowers”… so apt because this multifaceted, multitalented man has added so much color and vibrancy to Hindi film music over the years.

The recurring theme in Gulzar’s poetry is romance. He also seems to have a special fondness for the moon; the reference of which is cleverly interspersed into his lines. And somewhere deep down Gulzar remains a child, for the innocence and purity in his lyrics could only be because of that.

VEER - A Bolly-dream of another age

A much talked about and awaited film, 'Veer', despite Salman Khan's effort and involvement, tends to leave the audience exhausted after what seems like a wild and incongruous ride in a time machine.

Take films like 'Pirates of the Caribbean', 'He-Man' or even 'Braveheart'. Add a dose of splendourous images, epoch film moments featuring a beautiful girl and scenes with Indian festivals thrown in and...shazam! You have 'Veer'!

The plot concentrates on a Rajputana tribe who parties, drinks and kills, sometimes with a good helping of gore, while at the same time wearing impressive pirate-like or soldier outfits that are not historically identifiable. The tribe is betrayed by the king of Madhavgarh (Jackie Shroff), who acts in favor of the British. Veer and Punya (Salman and Sohail Khan), two of the tribe's young members, are sent to London in order to understand the British mindset and use this information to the advantage of their clan. Veer, however, falls in love with Madhavgarh's princess, making matters a little more complicated, as would usually have a typical Bolly-drama.

It is sad to see that a film in which so much splendour and energy has been placed has failed to put true soul into its story. In spite of an attractive soundtrack, lavish sets and some fun choreographies, 'Veer' fails to impress, mainly due to an underdeveloped plot and a thoroughly illogic script.

If you are a huge Salman Khan fan or if you care little about a logical plot and wish to watch a modern film that still features some of Bollywood's most ancient clichés: strong melodrama, good looking people in heavy clothing and colourful decors, by all means do watch 'Veer'. If not, you might want to wait for Salman's next releases or give another one of his past films a rewatch instead.

Slumdog Millionaire songs (2009)

8 Oscars, can you imagine? If yes then you are the perfectionist in imagination (:. Yes this movie deserved this. It is an adaptation of the novel Q & A (2005) by Indian author and diplomat Vikas Swarup. It star Dev Patel as Jamal Malik and Freida Pinto as Latika.Slumdog Millionaire songs A. R. Rahman (2009)

Set and filmed in India, Slumdog Millionaire tells the story of a young man from the slums of Mumbai who appears on the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? (Kaun Banega Crorepati, mentioned in the Hindi version) and exceeds people's expectations, arousing the suspicions of the game show host and of law enforcement officials.

The music is composed by A. R. Rahman. And do i need to praise it, of course not. A. R. Rahman has grabbed two oscars for the best original score and the song "Jai Ho" shared with Gulzar. O..Saya was also nominated, but Jai Ho is phenomenal. Ringa Ringa reminds me of songs in early 90s, Choli ke Peenchein kya hai, and i like it too. Other songs are also good.
