Gael Garcia Bernal, one of Latin America's most sought after and most popular actors, has seemingly been roped in to act in 'The Stamp Collector', a film about Partition featuring an international star cast. The film will be produced by Sanjay Bhattacharyajee, who has previously backed highly memorable films which have received critical acclaim such as 'Amu', 'Quick Gun Murugan', 'Bombay Summer' and 'Manorama Six Feet Under'.
'The Stamp Collector' is an English language film based on a short story by Vishwapriya Iyengar named "No Letter From Mother", which is set in 1947 and features a young girl who is sent to an Anglo Catholic Boarding school by her parents, while they migrate from Pakistan to India amidst the widespread chaos and violence of Partition. The script, by Francesca Di Amico, was selected as a finalist in the Sundance Institute Filmmaker's Lab and has received awards in screenwriting competitions.
Mexican actor, Gael Garcia Bernal, has been contacted to act in the supporting role of a charismatic priest and is enthusiastic about the script. The actor is known internationally for films like 'Amores Perros', 'The Motorcycle Diaries', 'Bad Education' and 'Babel' and portrayed a priest who struggles between desire and obedience in 'The Crime of Father Amaro', which received numerous awards and was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2003.
The film's cast is yet to be confirmed but would include three more international stars as well as a number of acclaimed Indian actors who have been foreseen for several of the main roles.
