ROCKSTAR A Rebel Sings

When Imtiaz Ali's film Rockstar released its first visuals and music, I was taken by expectation. Jab We Met is one of the Indian movies I always end up recommending to friends who are not Bollywood viewers, in the hopes of engaging them to watch more. I was therefore wishing that this new film would bring back the Imtiaz Ali I had appreciated, soon recommending Rockstar to friends I gathered could get bitten by the Bollywood bug.

First and foremost... and beyond any thoughts on the film itself, Rockstar is showcases how Ranbir Kapoor's acting keeps stepping a notch up with every film of his. I have seldom found an actor in India whom I like to watch if only to observe how his/her acting is evolving with each new character. And if there was still any doubt, the camera in this particular film truly says "Ranbir is the guy"!

But let's get on with Rockstar's plot: Janardhan or Jordan - also called JJ -  (Ranbir Kapoor) is a young man in college who dreams of becoming a rockstar, looking up to Jim Morrison. As he comes to understand that all artists have pain and heartbreak in common, Janardhan resolves to risk being interested in Heer (Nargis Fakhri), a beautiful girl who is known to have broken more than one heart and is number one in every college guy's chicklist. As time goes by however, Heer and Janardhan actually become friends. Later on, while Heer gets married to a man who takes her to live to Europe, Janardhan's musical journey takes off when he starts earning his bread singing bhajans. Classical singer, Ustad Jameel Khan, portrayed by the legendary Shammi Kapoor, is impressed, thus deciding to help the soon-to-become star get a record contract. Follows JJ's journey to become a true rebel rock musician moved by his love and involvement with Heer, whom he meets once again when he travels to Prague to record for his album...

Ranbir Kapoor, as we said before, along with a sincere attempt from Imtiaz Ali to capture a rise to fame, carry the film the entire time. Ranbir's comic timing is brilliant and the lively dialogues between him and his co-star, Nargis, swoosh the audience through the first part of the film with lots of fun and rhythm.

This said, as much as the original idea of Rockstar's story seems quite engaging, while watching the film, the love story element during the second half seems to be strangely warped and convoluted. Nargis Fakhri is pretty enough and makes an honest attempt to step up to Ranbir's talent. Unfortunately, the role she has been given seems way too complex and... to be honest... not very well written out. This results in it being difficult for her as a beginner to pull off Heer with the necessary brio and sadly so. Additionally, her acting often seems reminiscent to me of Jab We Met's Geet (?!). One can feel the director's hand at moulding the girl's character in a similar way and this distracted me more than once from the story at hand. I do hope Fakhri can be given a good role in line with her experience to showcase her budding talent someday. Sadly, Rockstar to me was not such a role, particularly because she is paired with an actor with whom the difference in terms of experience is absolutely palpable on screen and this affects the entire film.

The depiction of how Ranbir moves from a simple dreamer to a star during the movie's second half is also not quite logical but the actor manages to keep the viewer's attention through a great amount of intense and solid acting.  I would have liked it if the love story took a backseat more in order to make JJ's rise to fame a bit meatier and more focused on him and his coming of age through his art.

Definite brownie points go to A.R. Rahman's soundtrack and Mohit Chauhan's voice. Bravo, bravo and three times bravo! I feel one can count in the fingers of one hand the Indian rock soundtracks that are truly rock-music-based and soulful enough to last a long while in the musical subconscious of movie goers. A. R Rahman's album definitely makes the cut. The way he mixes Western influences with Indian musical codes proves once again how much Rahman is in command when he has to deliver a clear understanding of Western and folkloric music. I have seldom seen someone blend different musical universes more successfully in the Indian music industry.

Last but not least, the controversy over Indian censorship bowing down to maintaining good relations with China by omitting any sign of sympathy for Tibet during the picturization of song Sadda Haq, made lots of ink flow this last week in the newspapers. In this scene, JJ sings at a concert for Tibetan refugees and the audience carries a banner with a slogan in support of Tibetan independence. The censor board requested that the slogan be pixelized so that it would not appear on the screen. Though I understand that the censor board wanted to keep the support for a Tibetan cause in the film from making headlines, it seems as if all this talk about the censorship incident in the press gave the Tibetan cause more publicity than if they had just let the picturization be... I salute Ali for having filmed the scene and personally find it questionable that it had to be censored.

The trailer for Sadda Haq, released before the film however, still features the banner and a sign in favor of Tibet. The trailer ends with the words "This season claim what's yours". Because we still think the entire Sadda Haq scene lots its strength and rebellious purpose with the omission of the banners in cinema screens, we are therefore posting the video hereunder, hoping the T-Series trailer remains available to viewers to convey what the original and key scene actually should have instead of leaving it to be a rebellion of sorts.

Watch Rockstar for Ranbir and Shammi Kapoor, for fresh boy-girl dialogues and to get a feel of an Indian rebel. I would however not recommend the entire film to my non-Bollywoody friends... Maybe only the soundtrack and music videos? This blogger will have to wait for Imtiaz Ali's next. Someone who can cast Ranbir Kapoor in a good rebel role has to have more to him than meets the eye. Hence, no Sir, I have not given up hope.

Raajneeti Songs | Rajneeti Songs Download [MP3] [2010]

Raajneeti is an upcoming 2010 Indian political thriller written, directed, and produced by one of my favourite filmmakers Prakash Jha. Indian politics has always been a hot topic of discussion and Prakash Jha has always been known for his political and socio-political films. The film stars Ajay Devgan, Ranbir Kapoor, Arjun Rampal and Katrina Kaif in lead roles. The film is scheduled for release on 4 June, 2010.

The music has been composed by Wayne Sharp, Pritam, Aadesh Shrivastava and Shantanu Moitra.. After composing for Prakash Jha's "Gangaajal" and "Apharan", the Wayne collaborates with Jha once again for "Raajneeti". The music is impressive, I especially liked the semi-classical track "Mora piya".
Waiting eagerly for the release. Hope you like the songs...

BEST HINDI FILMS 2009 FOR DUMMIES

Hindi cinema is such a vast universe that coming up with a hot list for 2009 seemed daunting (it would be even harder to come up with a "Films of the Decade" list, but we still have a couple of months to write that one).

We decided to concentrate on films that we believe would appeal to an international audience. If we were Hindi film "pushers", what would we show uninitiated and non-Indian friends in order to convert them?

Here is the Hindi Cinema Blog's international pick for Best Hindi 2009 Film Releases:

Quick Gun Murugun: Be it as the first or last course of a filmi meal, 'Quick Gun Murugun' is a delicious satyre of everything a Hindi film virgin imagines Indian films are. Forget the difference between North Indian and South Indian films. The foreign common viewpoint is that Indian cinema is a mix of colours and dance, sprinkled with improbable script turns, action, love stories and a cheesy dialogue here and there. Well... 'Quick Gun Murugun' blends all these prejudices in a shaker and serves them as a clever and quirky cocktail, ensuring surefire entertainment for everyone: Hindi film buffs, Tamil film buffs and complete foreigners to the whole Indian film scene in general. Now that calls for one Masala Dosa with sambhar, I say!

Kurbaan: Do you want a full-fledged Hindi film experience? Despite a couple of loopholes here and there, particularly in the New York scenes, our vote goes to 'Kurbaan' for the beautiful visuals, performances, fabulous soundtrack, plot and climax. We believe it is one of the most honest attempts in mainstream Indian cinema to treat the delicate subject of terrorism and can definitely be considered international class entertainment.

3 Idiots: The year was marked by the undisputable victory at the box office of Rajkumar Hirani's '3 Idiots', which will undoubtedly continue collecting praise well after 2009 is gone and forgotten. Pulsating rhythm, optimism and a humanistic core give this film a high feel-good and entertainment quotient. There is something in it for everyone, whether it is great laughs or soul touching moments. Don't miss it.

Kaminey: A two-hour ride of unpredictable violence and stirring action, featuring Shahid Kapoor in an extremely convincing double role and Priyanka Chopra looking (praise the lord) as the girl next door and thus finally allowing viewers to concentrate on her acting instead of her looks. Kaminey is what we can call "thinking cinema", with each minute sincerely serving its purpose. Add to that a magnificent soundtrack and... Dhan te nan! You've got hot film material.

Firaaq: Nandita Das paints a disturbing and thought-provoking canvas in 'Firaaq', giving us a fictionalized account based on the Gujarat riots (2002) between Hindus and Muslims. Marvellously well cast, the story entwines the lives of 6 normal people who are affected by the communal violence taking place around them. No rose-coloured glasses are used in this story, despite all the escapism preconceptions that are spread about Hindi films among foreign viewers. A must watch.

Wake up Sid!: 2009 is the year that had us going back to school with '3 Idiots' and Dharma production's fresh, lively and youthful 'Wake Up Sid!'. Where other movies have failed to bring Ranbir Kapoor's full talent to the fore, this lighthearted film particularly succeeds. Is it the fact that they have cast him alongside a consistently excellent Konkona Sen Sharma? Is it the script? Who knows... but it works! Check out its soundtrack and the final hug scene (sorry guys, couldn't help it). You will come out of the cinema experience smiling, as if you had just received a big hug yourself.

Hopefully, this new year will bring plenty of amazing films, making more and more people abroad realize the international entertainment potential of Hindi films. Now that we have revealed our personal favorites, let us mention some of the films that made it to the 2009 runners-up list. Just in case your friends become as addicted to Hindi cinema as you are and are willing to take their experience a step further:

Luck by Chance (dir. by Zoya Akhtar, starring Farhan Akhtar and Konkona Sen Sharma) Insightful movie about the film industry in India. Mindblowing soundtrack.

Barah Aana (dir. by Raja Menon, starring Naseeruddin Shah, Vijay Raaz and Arjun Mathur) An unconvential view on the reasons behind organized kidnappings.

Videsh (Heaven on Earth): (dir. by Deepa Mehta, starring Preity Zinta) A beautiful Indian bride moves with her husband's family to Canada. She finds her inner self  and her strength when she is confronted to domestic violence and her new family's hostility.

Little Zizou (English language film by Indian film maker Mira Nair) A sweet and fun tale about a Parsi little boy who dreams of meeting football star Zidane.

Wake Up Sid Songs Download [MP3] [2009]

Wake Up Sid is a forthcoming romantic comedy movie, directed by debutante Ayaan Mukherjee, and scheduled to release on October 2, 2009. The movie is Mumbai-based romance about urban relationships and revolves around a good looking young guy (Ranbir Kapoor) who falls for an older and simple woman (Konkona Sen Sharma), a writer from Kolkata.

Wake Up Sid Songs

The film starts with the story of Sidharth Mehra (Ranbir Kapoor), a lazy, unmotivated slacker from Mumbai whose life undergoes a series of changes after taking his final year college exams. Sid's world is breezy, carefree, and without any true responsibilities. The most important elements in his life are his friends, his camera, his car, and his X-box 360. The plot looks cool! Lets hope this movie turns to be great.

BTW music, it's from one of the best trio's Shankar-Eshaan-Loy with lyrics from Javed Akhtar. Enough talking from me, now download the songs and check them out. Hope you like them

Bachna Ae Haseeno Songs Download [MP3] [2008]

An anonymous visitor requested the songs of Bachna Ae Haseeno, also many of the searches on this blog was for it, so I have added it's songs. Directed by Siddharth Anand, it starred Ranbir Kapoor, Bipasha Basu, Minissha Lamba and Deepika Padukone in the lead roles (1:3 ratio, lucky boy:). As I watched the film I enjoyed the first half a lot, but the latter half was a bit disappointing. Bachna Ae Haseeno Songs Download [MP3] [2008] Anyways, the great tunes is composed by Vishal-Shekhar (also composed of Dostana). I like 'Khuda Jaane' and upon it's release listened to it a lot. The title track has some of it's part from a fantastic song of Kishore Kumar and some parts rapped by Sumit Kumar. In case you need the original song, you may get it from here (Download). Others are also very good, try out if you haven't.
